Modern Classics – Joker T-shirt from Nerdyshirts
Saturday, February 7, 2009 7:31We are so not talking about T-shirt Hell. I mean really. Who cares?
Instead we went out looking for modern classics. T-shirts that will be as iconic, and instantly recognisable in thirty years time as the Che Tee is right now. (Did you know that Che Geuverra was actually rather a chunky guy? No? Well he was. Definitely not snake-hipped, anyway.)
We didn’t find a hell of a lot. Recession, right now, seems to be depressing the T-shirt market, not that buying is that much down, but there has been hardly any email traffic to the teejunkie address since the turn of the year, and that’s sad. Where are the shit-hot young designers who are going to turn the downturn to their advantage? They aren’t in evidence right now, that much is sure. If you’re one of the young guns, drop us a line so we can come and look at your stuff.

So we fell back on an old friend who does produce good design at a price that doesn’t have to make you wince. This Joker teeshirt has a macabre styling that harks back to Clockwork Orange and Andy Warhol. Of course, anything with Heath Ledger is going to have a bit of sentimental appeal (anybody remember those naff Brandon Lee T-shirts that came out when the late lamented left the building? Ugh) but this one is elevated above the mob by virtue of the crispness of the production, delivering a clean, sharply delineated but slightly abstract image that works well for apparel.
A couple of little nitpicks with Nerdyshirts though. They used to say that their tees were limited edition, buy now or miss out, which was a real incentive to own a T-shirt that wasn’t going to turn up everywhere – that promise doesn’t seem to appear on their site any more. And how come the $4.99 clearance sale clicky leads right back to the main page? That’s just annoying …
