Techy Tees

We all love fashionable t-shirts (if you don’t, what are you doing here??), but there is a growing market for functionable apparel as well. With computer science providing more power that’s being squeezed into ever smaller microchips a whole range of t-shirts, backpacks and jackets have arisen.  They are not only stylish but incorporate technology to allow you to do such things as listen to music through your clothing or use lighting to provide sophisticated safety clothing. We found some pretty cool techy tees worth checking out at the talk2tmyshirt blog. Dedicated solely to wearable electronics the blog both reviews new products in an impartial manner and provides a great overview of the technology involved, including previews of interesting new breakthroughs that could be used in the next generation of clothing. They introduced us to some great concepts of technology-as-design, including interactive t-shirts such as this Drum T, where banging on your chest on each drum will produce a corresponding sound (Neanderthal grunting is optional).

But our favourite has to be this dynamic tee, which utilises an electroluminescent display to create an unbelievable shifting colour. The T-qualizer retails for only $14.99 and for the technology involved this is a great price. All this tech would be useless without good design, and we love the way both of these t-shirts marry a novel idea with simple yet fashionable graphic. The only drawback is that both of these t-shirts require a small battery pack which some might find inconvenient when compared with a more comfortable fitted tee (plus we’re sure there’ll be someone who will put it in the washing machine before detaching the pack!).

The chances are the first place we hear about t-shirt of the future will be on blogs such as this one – so if you have seen any tech fashion developments worth checking out leave a comment below. We can’t wait to find out if it will be Star Trek style onesies we’re all set to wear in the future (and for the record we fervently hope it’s not).

For awhile,I thought i was worried Star Trek was a dying franchise. Then JJ Abrams came along. Good touch. The scene with kid Kirk was a tad too quirky in the film, even if it was popular in the movie trailer. Star Trek XI breathed new life into this precious Roddenberry world. I’d like to see all of this Enterprise cast returning for much more outings. I was raised with the original series. Heck, my pops got us a color Television just so we could watch Star Trek each and every Friday afternoon. Currently, I’m stuck on these new actors. In MHO, they’ve breathed life to their characters and made them their own. I, for example, am getting excited about more.
