Punk classic T-shirts from classic punks
Wednesday, March 18, 2009 12:02Fifth Column was formed in 1977 – think about that for a moment. 1976, When Johnny Rotten was still spitting, The Clash still had their training wheels on and boy bands and girl bands hadn’t even been invented.
So four punk rockers got together to make their own T-shirts. Now they are a corporate entity, employing thirteen people and working in a mad space over Kentish Town Tube station in London.
Given their origins, it won’t be a surprise to learn that they’re into all kinds of weird, or as they put it themselves ‘… shirts are the ultimate medium to getting across an idea, look, statement or ethic in order to inspire people to respect and care for themselves and each other, and their cultural and social environment’ … so they give away teeshirts to good causes and have sponsored a tidal powered moon clock and a cycling expedition to Sydney – punks on pushbikes – would you believe it?
But can creative anarchy survive for three decades? I think so.

This Johnny Rotten T-shirt is an example. Hand-printed, so no two are identical, worked in Warhol colours so that it feeds into that whole art movement and featuring one of the most loved/hated characters of the punk rock world, it’s got everything a bloke could want in a tee.
Not only that, the price is favourable too, just £15.00 and postage for a piece of individually created art-clothing – can’t be bad!
