Bee there or be square T-shirt from Tasty Tees
Thursday, April 16, 2009 5:08There’s a strange thing about Tasty Tees, which is that I forget about them sometimes. I don’t mean that as a criticism, I mean that, like when you forget to call your BGF for a few days, or you go home to the folks and the dog goes crazy and you realise that you haven’t thought about the dog but now you realise how much you missed it … that kind of thing. A sense of certainty.
Tshirt as Art, Art as Tshirt, is how Toby and Chris at Tasty Tees see their business and it’s a solid concept: limited edition tees created by up and coming artists, with a percentage of the profit being used to provide support for teenage artists in difficult circumstances (and no, I don’t mean they are painting upside down or anything). There’s a good marketing angle for the consumer – they are buying something that could go on to become a classic (wouldn’t you like to have an original Banksy or Damien Hirst on your front?) and you’re supporting kids who are having a tough life.
All said, Tasty Tees can encourage you to get metaphysical, especially this month, when they are about to feature Rachel Budde. Their description of her tee: ‘Through a multiplicity of symbolic images, Rachel Budde explores the relationship between the ethereal and the mundane, the sacred and the profane. Rachel has studied Indian miniature painting technique and Thangka painting in India, as well as sign painting, pin-striping and tattooing in the US. She is interested in technique as a continuum, the perpetuation of a ‘tradition’ within the ever changing context of contemporary culture’.
Funnily enough, Indian miniature painting, which you don’t hear a lot about in the West, is something that appears in the cvs of a lot of T-shirt designers in India and Indonesia – both of which are places where there’s a strong tradition of spiritual miniature painting and a thriving industry in creating tourist art by hand. And Rachel’s work on this Tee does show something of that intricate, closely-observed detail that makes it unique. I think it’s a winner. Available not yet, but soon, investing it in will make you a happy T-shirt wearer.
