flowerskl The ‘Name that City’ T shirtJustin from Burn Suburbia got in touch to remind me about their one designer, one city T-shirts. Funnily enough (okay, it’s not that funny) he picked a city I know pretty well – I spent a couple of months in KL as she is affectionately known, a few years ago, and have never forgotten just how multicultural and complex the city can be. So I looked at Ciaee Ching’s Teeshirt with extra care, to see how well it matched up to my recollection of the place.

kl1 The ‘Name that City’ T shirtHand-printed T-shirts have a special ambience that works well with intricacy and this complex design is well balanced by the very subtle colors used – anything stronger or with more contrast could have overwhelmed the image. One beautiful detail of the tee is the way that the numbers around the clock face are rendered in four different scripts: Chinese, Arabic, Tamil and Roman, which reflects the melting pot nature of Malaysian society generally and the vibrancy of Kuala Lumpur in particular.

While the design works well for both men and women, I suspect (okay, I showed it to Mikey and he twitched, which confirmed my suspicion) that it might take a pretty confident or metrosexual kind of guy to wear this custom T-shirt with confidence.

Post by Kay, who remembers the Pad Thai, the silk painting and the fresh papaya juice with fondness, but doesn’t miss the KL smog one bit actually …
