Why is it soooo cold? This weather is just crazy.

So anyhoo, after last week’s snippy conversation between me and Mikey, I get to have another pick this week as he booked a holiday. Poor Mikey. I hope his tent is waterproof.

And given just how cold it is everywhere, I have chosen this Poketo sweater. Acts like a pullover, looks like a heather marl tee and with a very elegant design that would work with white capris and a big beach bag for an evening summer cover-up or (like now) with jeans, boots and a scarf for a wet, cold evening in May. Whatevah.

It’s a sweet buy at $52 and shipping if you’re outside the USA, or, if you are willing to be adventurous, have four of their ‘mystery’ tees for just $60 and hope the weather warms up enough that you can wear them!

This may not look like the most elegant T-shirt ever, but believe me, it’s been the most exciting thing I’ve seen for a long, long time.

This is a garment that, according to the Japanese designers, is based on the area cleared by windscreen wipers. So that’s definitely an abstract depiction!

Anyway, depending on the version you buy, the curves are deceptive – there’s version I which has three stripes and the top one is a microfibre strip that can be used to polish up your mobile or other device, while version II has a microfibre bottom strip that can be used by the average geek to clean his or her spectacles. I’m assuming it works for night-goggles too, if that’s your bag.

Is that not awesome!

The price is fearsome – around £40 plus, and I say again, PLUS shipping, but it’s such an amazing concept and I think, if you’re a guy, you might even find that cute gals come and ask if they can clean their HTC or iPhone on your T-shirt, and that’s priceless.

My mom was a nurse. This may seem like too much information, but it explains my instant negative reaction to Adhesion. You see, from my childhood, I knew adhesions were bad news because they are ‘bands of scar-like tissue that form between two surfaces inside the body and cause them to stick together’ which is not nice when the two surfaces are not mean to stick together, like, for example, organs and stomach walls.

Soooo …. Apparently in physics, the opposite is true. Adhesion is, ‘the tendency of certain dissimilar molecules to cling together due to attractive forces.’ (I’ve got to admit, it’s a nicer definition, by far.)

And this is what this new design and clothing brands aims to do, bring together opposing concepts so that a new message is bred (not so sure about that, sounding a bit Frankenstein’s monster, to me). And while I really don’t like girl-face T-shirts a lot of the time, as they strike me as being emo, I did like this one, because it has a weird Matrix like micro/meta level image of birds/face/birds and also because it’s eco-friendly ink, which is becoming much more common now, and is really cool to see making the mainstream.

$25 is an okay price, the colors are swoony and ideal for spring, and the shipping is free! So stick around (lol, pun intended) and see what this new brand does next!

Girl with a dragon tattoo? I think so! I love the Steig Larsson books and I love this T-shirt which is, in fact a Geisha image (as an aside, I can actually do that thing with the chopstick hair updo, and it’s pretty awesome) and comes from Akumu (Japanese for bad dream, in case you don’t speak the language) a brand I’m getting to love. Not Japanese, by the way, but a very cool USA based enterprise that loves all things Nippon, as I do myself.

The colorways chosen by Akumu Ink are really cool – very much off the Japanese palette and they give a depth to the artwork which makes it distinctive without being cute. Think Tim Burton without the studio censorship on his imagination, and you’ve got it.

Okay $26 plus shipping is on the top end of acceptable pricing these days, with so many T-shirt sites having fire sales, but really, you this is quality work and deserves to be supported. Also, you will never be mistaken for an idiot if you are wearing an Akumu garment, and that’s got to be an investment worth making!

I’m not a big fan of yellow T-shirts (and yes, you can call them gold as much as you like, I know that gold is a malleable metal, not a garment hue!) but this one has a strong appeal to me. I like the color combination, and I am impressed by the boldness of the image which works well with the intricacy of the fiery kite which is pretty impressive when seen in real life, believe me!

I think there are people who couldn’t wear this T-shirt – pasty redheads need not apply, for a start – but if you have strong coloring and you like to make a statement with new spring clothing, I think this T-shirt could be ideal for you.

At just $18 I think this is an amazing deal – it’s the kind of tee that you can wear anywhere, knowing that it’s going to be talked about in admiring tones. A definite winner from Fullbeed.

My mind is running on Lent issues at the moment as everybody (except Mikey) seems to have given up something bad or taken up something good. My little world is full of pious ex-smokers and virtuous ex-chocaholics along with foul-mouthed folk who are putting money in a jar every time they curse and sending it to help kids in Africa go to school.

So I have been feeling a bit … under-resourced in the holiness department I suppose. And then I came across this gorgeous T-shirt over at chopshop – it’s a real masterwork of typography and the underlying message is quite somber – seven deadly sins made to look just as enticing, T-shirt-wise, as they are in real life.$22, plus shipping of course, this is the work of the excellent Joby Cummings out of LA whose personal site has some awesome ‘sugar skull’ illos that it’s really worth browsing.

Found over at Design by Humans, this Holy Shark T-shirt is a bloody (pun intended) glorious design by Shinto 896 and it suggests what might happen if you fall off a sailing vessel T-shirt into the briny. I felt the balance between colour, shape and dynamic imagery was pretty well perfect on this one.

The same site also a great interview from Wotto, talking about how he went from freelancing to Creative Director at Design by Humans, worth reading for the career path, the revelation that he loves Moomins, and the tips on how to design a T-shirt.

Not a pirate but still a schooner of a T-shirt, this neat little tee is not the cheapest, but the Euro is struggling and if we don’t support the economy, maybe there won’t be a Europe left for language students to come and invade every year!

I like the delicacy of the shading on this grayscale T-shirt and it would look fab with some of this year’s ultrabrite Capri pants in turquoise or hot pink, especially if you have a bit of a muffin top as gray is forgiving in concealing a little roll. Cottonblend Apparel are a new outfit to me, and I don’t speak Dutch so I have no clue what they’re about. I like their Tees though.

When I say there’s something childish about this T-shirt I don’t mean it in a bad way – I kind of like a certain T-shirt styling that has an optimistic and charming feel, like a children’s book, and this look can be really good, for example, on a first date where you don’t want a guy to get too heavy, as it doesn’t look infantile but just highlights an approach that’s friendly and open without being needy.

Square Thursday go across my radar and sometimes barely make a blip, but this T-shirt won my heart. When I was a kid I used to do origami a lot. My mom bought me a book of designs and papers and I used to go to her office after school and sit on the floor behind her desk and make little animals. So this fox T-shirt reminded me of that time (although I’m not sure I ever made anything as complicated as the fox).

It’s a beautifully balanced T-shirt, both in design and in production: Square Thursday’s organic cotton comes from low-irrigation areas, with guaranteed and audited adult agricultural labour and a closed loop dye-water system that ensures nothing nasty leaks into the ecosystem. The shirts are printed with organic ink, packed in recycled packaging and shipped by Royal Mail. All in all it’s a good package. £25 is not cheap for a T-shirt, but all that love and care (and the neat little creases in those origami folds!) make it totally worth it.
