Spunky - Glasto Genius in a tent

// 06.19.08

Mikey going on about Glastonbury reminded me of something. An excellent T-shirt brand that regularly produces the cool’n’funky (and oftentimes, muddy) kind of tees that Glastonites revel in. The company in question is Spunky and I nipped over to their website to see what they had on offer.

And actually, I was deeply disappointed. Not in their tees, but in their site. When I buy a T-shirt I want to see the T, not some artist’s impression of the garment. So having drooled over a truly spectacular bit of artwork on a friend’s bod, (the bod wasn’t bad either) it was a bit of a comedown to go to the site and find this:

it’s a minging little image, and you cannot tell what it’s of, even.

Okay, when you roll over the image you get to see a proper sized version, but as soon as you roll off, you’re back to this bit of artwork:

Nice enough design, but showing a graphic hardly tells you how the T-shirt looks in reality (take my word for it, it looks good) and that’s not gonna get my money out of my pocket, I can tell you! So ‘full marks’ to Spunky for manning and womaning a great marquee at Glastonbury and definitely a ‘could do better’ on the selling their gear on the net front.

Hear It, Wear It.

// 11.15.05

I don’t know where the fuck I’ve been, but my homeboy Joe just turned me onto my new favorite punk record of all time, British punk band Crass and their late 70s, not even sure what year, Stations of the Crass. Check it out and you’ll want one of these old school punk tees as bad as I do. And you can get it from rerock4ever

Hear It, Wear It

// 11.03.05

Time for another edition of Hear It, Wear It boys and girls! Today we’ve got Dirty Loop / Mush Records. This is the home of some of the best underground shit out there, mostly abstract hip-hop, but not strictly hip-hop. Some of their stuff you should check definitely out includes: Busdriver, Daedelus, Neotropic and especially cLOUDDEAD (Anticon’s Doseone, Why? and Odd Nosdam.)

You dig punk, noise and all around weird-ass music? And black tees? Yeah, I know this one isn’t black, but most of them are… they’ve got several bands that I dig, but I couldn’t pass up this Atom & His Package tee with it’s obnoxious yellow and pink print. So if looking for something a little hard to listen to, give No Idea Records a peek… err, a listen… well… both.

Alright, maybe this isn’t the greatest of t-shirt designs… it’s just a record label logo tee. It’s a great little label though. If you dig hip-hop, but aren’t into the whole bitches and bling or that shitty crunk thing. Give Galapagos4 a try, especially Qwel, Typical Cats and Mestizo…

Hear it, Wear it #6

// 09.01.05

I just realized it’s been a while since I did a “Hear it, Wear it” feature, so here it is…

Warp Records. A dope label with tons of great records and quite a few cool shirts. Of all the tees, I prefer this simple Aphex Twin logo one. You know Aphex Twin, right? You’ve probably seen his crazy mug and maniacal smile all over his videos directed by Chris Cunningham. If you’ve seen the “Windowlicker” video, you know this logo will have all the honeys fighting to get into your car… if you haven’t seen it, track it down, I know you can find it online somewhere.

The tees are kinda hard to find on the site, down at the bottom of the site, go to warpmart, then just search for shirts and it’ll list ‘em all.

And some of their artists I recommend that you might not have heard of: Beans, Home Video, Maximo Park, Two Lone Swordsmen.

If you’re a fan of old school punk, you should already be aware of Bomp Records and their sister labels Alive and Disaster, but if not, well… what kind of fuckin’ punk are you? These guys are the masters of re-releases and compilations of unreleased gems, as well as discovering young talent. Go get yourself a copy of the Exploding Fuck Dolls collection, Stiv Bators / Dead Boys re-releases, the Old Skars & Upstarts comps… the list goes on and on. And oh yeah, get yourself a Bomp logo tee too while you’re at it… (or Stooges, Brain Jonestown Massacre, Dead Boys, MC5, New York Dolls…)

The home of pre-metal face MF Doom alter-ego Viktor Vaughn, Brooklyn’s Sound Ink Records. Check ‘em out if you dig some cutting edge hip-hop that’s not all about bitches and bling. Mostly a vinyl label, but if you’re not into that, pick up Vaudeville Villain and the Colapsus compilation on a convenient, shiny, silver disc… and a “Bastard Soul” tee while your at it.

Hear it, Wear it. #3

// 07.27.05

Well, here’s the third installment of Hear it, Wear it. Hopefully everybody enjoyed Funkstörung and all the other great stuff at K7 and/or BBJ and Bloodshot. Today we have a hip-hop collective/label out of San Francisco - Anticon. A group of crazy-ass white boys making some hip-hop that’s like nothing else out there - offering a bunch of cool tees and hoodies too, and after all, that’s why we’re here.

DoseOne, Jel, Why?, Sole, Alias, Passage, Pedestrian… too many dudes to list, just check ‘em out. Hot shit! There’s tons of tracks online, but just go ahead and get the label sampler. 80 minutes of tracks spanning the history of the label for a measly $7.25.

So I go to see Bobby Bare, Jr. (on the great Bloodshot label) play the other night in some shitty dive bar in Denton, a small college town about an hour from Dallas, and there couldn’t have been more than 60 people in there. Damn shame. This dude deserves to be selling out much bigger venues. Check out a couple of his tracks here or here. (especially Let’s Rock & Roll and The Terrible Sunrise)

So what kind of music does Bloodshot put out?…
“What do we call it? We call it music, buddy boy. If you want unaffected rock and roll, we got it. You want some old school honky tonk untarnished by the shit Nashville has chosen to promote for the last generation? We got it. Psychedelic-inflected roots or catchy pop gems? Look no further. You want blistering fast psychobilly or thrash-grass? Yup, we got that, too.”
…just don’t call it alt-country. They don’t like that.

Get the BBJ tee here or the Bloodshot one here.
