This is just gorgeous – if I’d seen it in time, I’d have been wearing it for New Year’s. I like Remuse – this $18 tee has all the impact of much more expensive designs, and yet holds to its skate/street origins. The clothing is sweat-shop free, so you can give it as a gift without worrying that you’d offend an ethically-focused friend (like me, hint hint?)

So this is called Fall From Grace and the tagline says ‘We have all fallen from grace at some point in life. Whether it be from peer pressure, loss of faith, or personal gain. The true test is restoring that grace.’ I think there’s a lot to that … and I love this girl’s hair, butterflies and general lushness. I mean the girl on the T-shirt, obviously, although the model has good hair and great tats!

The Philly based collective is young, and quirky. Their art is thought-provoking without being exclusive and I really think it’s going to grow … maybe 2012 will be their year.

There’s a theory about skirt length and recessions. Apparently when there is plenty money, lots of optimism, women wear way short skirts, but when there’s little money, lots of downer news, women wear looong skirts. If you think about this summer’s maxi dress, it does kind of seem that’s true.

So is there a teeshirt correlation, do we prefer complex tee designs in a recession? I think maybe I do. I notice that a lot of my picks since fall have been quite design-rich and intricate and the T-shirt that I favor this week is no exception. It’s from 604REPUBLIC who are teeshirt geeks and proud of it. Their store is totally committed to the geek-love approach to pop culture and this mecha heart tee was just exactly what I wanted to get for Valentine’s (but didn’t).

Not the cheapest around at $18.95, but with a top print quality that gives their chosen tees durability, and a sweet cut to the sleeve offering a great fit to a toned arm (am I boasting? just a little) I am quite geeky over 604REPUBLIC myself.

Lars Harmsen is editing a book about typography in T-shirt design and culture. Unsurprisingly, the book is called TypoShirt (One) which makes us clever types at teejunkie think that Lars is planning a series.

So, he’s calling for entries – the title will be published by INDEX Books (Barcelona) this very year, and if you have a T-shirt design created explicitly with typographic elements, you might get featured. You get a complimentary copy of the book and, of course, everlasting fame.

So get your stuff off to Lars, let us know you’ve entered, and we’ll review the book when it comes out!

It’s the season to be giving. But it’s nice to get something back, right? So if you give EFF a year end donation, you get to choose from a special edition xkcd t-shirt or hooded sweatshirt as your reward – while stocks last, anyway.

So if you don’t know xkcd it is the geek comic of choice.

And if you don’t know EFF, they are the people who defend free speech, stand up for privacy, fight for government transparency, support consumer rights, and protect your right to innovation in the digital world – all through helping people who fall foul of this kind of government or commercial limiting of our human right to look at porn, make a prat of ourself in an email, say what we think about any subject etc online. Not including hacking into the pentagon of course… or maybe even that.

This T-shirt/hoodie choice is a tough one. The T-shirt is classic but the hoodie is winter appropriate. The T-shirt actually seems to work a little better with the comic strip, but the hoodie is geekier. Maybe I’ll double donate and get both.

Limited edition T-shirts are fantastically valuable if you pick the right ones, so you could see this as a financial investment for the future. Point is, without organisations like EFF there might not be a digital future we like the look of, so even if this doesn’t become a sought after classic, you’ll probably have helped save the world. Sort of.

Life is getting tough. Folk can’t afford to buy clothes for work and home, so what to do?

One answer is to upgrade, not downgrade, your wardrobe and on that basis the T-shirts sold by Nau are an investment. They are not cheap. I’ll say that again. They are not cheap. $55 for a basic tee sounds crazy, I know, if you can’t find $10 for a pizza, but bear with me, there’s logic to this.
Cheap tees are not an investment. They look good for a couple of weeks, a couple of months if you’re fussy about how you wash and store them, and then they are only fit for TV nights in. But a top quality T-shirt should last you several years and if the styling is absolutely classic, will look good for that whole time.

So to Nau – this women’s T-shirt is made from 100% organic cotton, which is planet saving, so that’s already an investment in karma. More fashion-focused details are that it has slight pleats at the neckline and a three-quarter length sleeve that is also slightly gathered so that the effect is more tailored and snugger where it matters, eliminating the risk of sag and drag, those twin markers of Tee senility. In black, white and dark gray (they call them caviar, pure and twilight – pretentious, eux?) it’s a good start to a capsule wardrobe that could carry a cash-light fashionista through the tough year ahead. Worn with jeans this will look good, but with an office skirt, it’ll upgrade to smart without looking like you’re trying to double up your wardrobe use, even if you are.

Okay, it’s been a while since we did a ‘Tee for the Mothers’ slot and as I seem to know a lot of Mothers In Waiting right now (and, come to think of it, as most of them visited the office last year when Mikey was around … nah, that’s gotta be a coincidence right?) I was forcibly reminded (the old large and pregnant lady yammering in your ear while sitting on your desk cos your chair’s not big enough for her any more approach) that we are due to feature a maternity T-shirt again.

And so this is my pick. At $22.99 it’s not the cheapest tee on the block but every little bump is worth it, right? And given how easily motherhood seems to drive women into the cute zone, I think anything that reminds those around them that this is a person with brains, who simply happens to be incubating another person who will have a brain, even if that’s not obvious in the first couple of years, (have I lost track of this sentence, surely I have!) is a good thing. (Whew, excellent recovery there)

Think Geek are never flashy, they don’t do splashy, and sometimes the geek joke wears a leeeetle bit thin, but then they produce an idea as elegant as this neatly executed T-shirt and I forgive them all their nerdiness.

As Mikey is sulking about American imperialism I thought I’d try to celebrate his great cultural heritage to cheer him up. After all the country that gave us girrrl power and Daniel Craig was bound to offer up something we could all get behind, right?
