The lines have been closed and it’s time to reveal the Teejunkie Designer of the Year – 2010 as voted for by Teejunkie readers.

The interest this year has been overwhelming and is testament not only to the standard of designers on show, but to the passion of T-shirts enthusiasts online. Thanks to the promotion of the designers and bloggers like Hideyourarms, The T-Shirt Review and T-Shirt Today, we have had more votes than ever with designers positions on the leaderboard changing everyday.

So without further ado, I can announce that the ‘Teejunkie Designer of the Year – 2010’ is:

With so many designers out there, we have scoured the internet to bring you our top 50 nominees. Aled can do what a lot of designers fail to achieve, he can create pieces that are both thought-provoking, and have a razor sharp comic edge. Though a mostly self taught artist, Alejandro talents are some of the best and most creative around. His interests in the metaphysical, the surreal, nostalgic memories and his kids can certainly been seen in his works. His philosophy about art is that it must make sense in his heart as well as being pleasing to the eye.

As an illustrator by day and wannabe comic book artist by night, it is clear to see the inspiration for Alex’s Fistful apparel range. Working in conjuncture with other designers he states how these fantastic pieces were inspired by cult and genre cinema, Japanese and European comics, Mexican culture, movie poster design, plus the whimsy and aesthetics of the Silver Age of Comic Books.

With over 51 designs in the run on DesignByHumans, it is clear that animabase is not short of finding inspiration. His works are all loosely linked by an element of fantasy combined with a clean comic book finish. His use of bold colours really help to make his designs pop out and catch the eye.

Although he claims he just ‘colours in for a living’, Blair Sayer is certainly a talented freelance illustrator. His childhood of doodling on napkins seems to have inspired his work, as there is a distinct cartoon influence to his style.

His current clients include Nike and Adidas and is proud to have designed a shirt for his countryman–boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao. It is no surprise that he finished in the top 5 of this competition last year as his T-shirts are universally funny and guaranteed to make you smile.

Derek Deal’s style could definitely be described as bold. His T-shirts use outlandish designs which have obviously helped him to commercial success, with bands such as Less than Jake employing his creative talents to create T-shirts. His use of popular T.V. shows such as Wayne’s World and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles as inspiration help to create designs that are both individual but commercial at the same time.

Diego is a passionate and clearly talented illustrator and designer working at Grupo W in Mexico. His designs are highly rated on laFraise.com and this must be in part due to his use of bold colours. In addition nature seems to be an influence with some of his designs coupling sayings with animals characteristics.

Draco started drawing when he was only 6 years old, with his advancement into design being just as a natural progression. Though there is certainly diversity in his designs, there is a playfulness that seems to link them all, shown particular in this design below.

Though drawing inspiration from a range of artistic mediums, Joel always tries to filter it through his ’crazy imagination’ and attempt to come up with his own ’unique vision’. This has obviously stood him in good stead as he made last years top 10. Many of his designs seem to be infused with a computer game quality particularly those designed with Crescentdebris.

If I had to use two words to describe Ed’s work it would be colourful and eccentric. His work is the type that will certainly get you noticed! His designs are regularly featured on T-shirt sites including Threadless and he has had several pieces written about his works.

Tom is a freelance illustrator and graphic designer with a real eye for colour combinations and witty designs. His had a broad portfolio with some designs being simple and clean cut and others more intricate. The shirt below particularly stood out for its simple but effective play on a spaghetti western and its strong colour pairing.

Flying Mouse is certainly a name to be reckoned with in the T-shirt world. With his FM365 project turning out quality designs everyday of the year, it is clear that Flying Mouse has a huge creative talent. His accolades include 3 Threadless Bestees for “Most Printed Designer 2007″, “Newcomer Of The Year 2007″, and “Best Concept For A Design 2007“. He is also the designer that holds the record for most winning submissions with an incredible 28 selected designs.

Originally based in Toronto, Canada, Hermann Lee is a graphic designer. His works use a dazzlingly array of colour with a splashed, watercolour effect that really make a visual impact. This type of work sets Hermann aside from more basic designers and shows an artist using a t-shirt as his blank canvas.

Colin is an English designer and illustrator. His artistic talents were first employed in sculpture, but with a desire to be more internationally accessible came a change in his medium of choice. Now focussing on apparel, Colin creates cheeky designs that are bold and individual.

It is hardly suprising that Glenn reached the top 10 of this competition last year as he is a big name in the T-shirt industry. Though based in New Zealand, his success on the Threadless allowed him to create his own website. Now he ships his simple and fresh designs all over the world and has a huge following of fans. His designs match nice colour combinations with witty and well thought out designs, which explains why he has become so universally popular.

Jason’s designs can be described as gritty and dark. Using his website Gutterpark.com to display his works, Jason tackles themes such as loss, bullying and war and creates powerful designs that both move and provoke. By addressing these more serious topics in such an artistic way, Jason creates a tragic beauty which sets him apart from other designers.

Joshua is the founder of the full time design studio Hydro74. Joshua’s talent has attracted big clients such as Quicksilver, Billabong and Burton. It’s clear that Joshua focuses on a street and sporting style, with his designs focussing on skateboarding, surfing and snowboarding styles. Obviously high quality and well though-out, Joshua’s designs show him matching his own creative talents with his clients needs.

Ian is an independent graphic artist. Having worked with clients both at home and abroad, it is clear that Ian’s talents are known the world-over. Ian has a range of T-shirts that can be found on all the leading websites including Designbyhumans and Woot. He has also created commercial work for the likes of Green Day and Counting Crows.

InnerMonsters have created a really great range of T-shirts. With muted colours, it is clear their focus is on creating impeccable designs that are immaculately finished. These designs have a common theme of sketched monsters in a cartoon style reminiscent of a music video by the gorillas.

Jason clearly knows what people are looking for in T-shirt design as he has had no fewer than 5 winning designs on DesignByHumans. His T-shirts have a range of designs but one can see a common association with animals. Indeed Jason animal passion is so great that he has designed a T-shirt in the aim of saving Sea Turtles.

Matthew Skiff’s designs could be described as comic horror. His work has a strong comic influence with its use of bold colours. This helps make his sometimes slightly gruesome designs appear beautifully finished. Matthew is obviously influenced by a skater boy culture as he reproduces some of his designs for skateboards.

Dave is a great designer of t-shirts that make you smile. His quirky design style brings fresh twists on designs that you don’t see by other artists. His youthful insight has seen him have success on Threadless, perhaps due to these T-shirts being appealing and funny to people of any age. Dave featured in the top 5 designers last year and it comes as no surprise.

He has worked with clients such as MTV and Threadless, had internships with the Brooklyn Digital Foundry and Portosa Studios, and is currently a designer for Reporter Magazine.

Jorge has always had a love of art and has set up his label Qetza. Although he was mostly focussed on pencil drawing, he has also dabbled in ceramics and painting. Describing himself as having been weaned on old horror comics, pulp ficiton and sci-fi as a baby, one can see where his style stems from. After recently breaking away from a designer role in an apparel company, Nick has started his own clothing line. It clear that Sawdust and Steel are not looking to follow the commercial lines of T-shirt design. Indeed they describe how they decided to work organically and reasonably in the world to create some kick ass art on apparel.

He believes that the essence of every artwork is its basic idea, so he devotes a great deal of time for an idea to emerge.

There are winners and losers at every Oscars ceremony – Meryl Streep seems doomed never to get there while Sean Penn was a definite outsider for his golden mannequin. But for Just Be T-shirts, the Oscar gold doesn’t come on the night, it’s going to happen, Michelle Pratt-Lienhart hopes, when the paparazzi catch some Oscar winner or loser wearing a Just Be tee around town.

This is because Michelle, being a smart cookie, managed to get her T-shirts into fifty official Oscar Night Party goody bags. The booty bonus is handing out to the stars BEFORE the awards are televised, so we don‘t see them tramping down the red carpet with their sacks of freebies.

Michelle got lucky when she saw a Tweet posted by a marketing company who were trolling for specialist products to put in the gift bags and her positive message T-shirts were a big hit with them – whether the slogans Be Dignified and Be Organic or Be Muddy for dirt bike enthusiasts will be a big hit with Brangelina and Mickey Rourke remains to be seen. Pratt-Lienhart is hoping that social networking will promote her business as she uses the brand website to get buyers to suggest new slogans, post pictures and tell their own stories. blah blah blah

I’m not fond of the amount of pink that appears in some of the Just Be tees, but I did like the dirt bike version which has a nice vertical image which is macho enough for guys but clever enough to work for gals too.

Alright, I’ve still got more music tees, but I’ll just get on with the winner and save the others for another day. So… the Shirty for “Best Music Related Tee” goes to… (drum roll) Tenth Division for their “Maintain Your Faith” tee with it’s cross of vinyl! (roaring applause)

It came down to these two tees. But in the end, the vinyl one beats out the I [heart] my record collection one. But they’re both from Tenth Division, so I guess it doesn’t really matter.

This tee reminds me of this song by this guy called “Marc with a C” about his love of vinyl and thrift shop finds. It has a line that goes something like: “It’ll cost ya twenty dollars for some Avril Lavigne, but for a dollar I’ll take Tapestry by Carol King.” and something about Kurt Cobain knowing music sounds best on vinyl and the Black Nirvana record having an extra track…

I finally got around to watching Bubba Ho-Tep last night. If you haven’t seen it, you should. What better premise for a movie is there than Elvis growing old in an East Texas nursing home, along with a black JFK and a zombie on the loose that sucks souls out of old people’s assholes to stay alive? I know that might not sound good, but it’s fuckin’ brilliant…

The movie starts with Elvis laying in bed… “I was dreamin’. Dreamin’ my dick was out and I was checkin’ to see if that infected bump on the head of it had filled with pus again. If it had, I was gonna name it after my ex-wife Priscilla and bust it by jackin’ off. Or I’d like to think that’s what I’d do. Dreams let you think like that. Truth was, I hadn’t had a hard-on in years.” – wow.

So I like to think that if Elvis was still around, he’d still be a pretty hip cat. Therefore, this tee with the King behind the turntables gets a nomination for the best music Shirty coming up too…

I wouldn’t consider myself a music snob or anything, but when I ask people what kind of music they listen to, 90% of ‘em say, “I listen to everything.” And normally that turns out to mean “whatever is on the radio.” But I really do listen to a lot of different shit. Anything from Hip Hop to different kinds of electronica, some country (but very few country artists, mostly like Bloodshot Records) to rock, pop to funk, folk to punk. Pretty much everything except the FM dial. So do me a favor, next time somebody asks you what you listen to… have an answer besides “everything”. At least a couple of bands you like or something.

And if you’ve never heard Sun Ra and His Solar Arkestra. Check it out. It’s some great shit. When I came across Listen Clothing (they have tons of great funk shit) this Sun Ra one was callin’ my name. So that in turn sparked my curiosity to see if there were any other Sun Ra shirts out there. I gotta say, I was a bit surprised to find (but not as excited by) this other one [possibly] available from Louisiana Music Factory. The contact page says they are on Decatur Street in New Orleans. I’m pretty sure that’s downtown NO, so you might wanna call them and see if they are still around before ordering… hopefully they are. But anyway, there’s a couple more nominees for the upcoming Shirty for Best Music Related Tee.

note: I saw this DVD once called The Magic Sun, it was dissappointingly short, but it was just tripped out negative black and white video shot super closeup to the band members hands playing instruments and shit. Worth watching if you ever have a chance. If you’re a Netflix member, go add it to your list here.

Update: You might remember a while back I posted up a chick’s shirt from Secret Handshake. Well, they got in touch asking me if I saw their Sun Ra shirt by artist Tim Kerr since I was on the subject. I do remember seeing it now, but damn! 3 Sun Ra shirts. I guess that just goes to show how many tees are out there… Anyway, this one definitely deserves to be in this group of nominees. I like it at least as much as the Listen Clothing one and more than the other one.

Not by a band or label (that’s what “Hear it, Wear it” is for), but for a designer that tips their hat to music in general, to a style of music – or the completely unauthorized use of an artist’s likeness.
