Here in the UK, it’s Shrove Tuesday. All I can tell you about this event is it’s nominally religious, but really nominous. It’s all about the food.

Shrove Tuesday is pancake day, when everybody’s mother puts on a frilly apron and tosses the old pancakes for family pleasure. If you don’t have a mother, or an apron, you toss your own.

Eat them British style with sugar and lemon juice, or tart them up like Americans do with aerosol cream and strawberries, or take the Continental crepe approach with bananas and hazelnut spread – however you eat yours, it’s pancakes to the people for £15.12.

So another year’s over, and what have we done?

Not a lot. In December me and Kay both had the ‘flu which wiped out teejunkie for most of the month. We didn’t infect each other btw. I wanted to say that before nasty minds started thinking the worst but given that nasty minds will think the worst anyway, I’m wasting my time, aren’t I?

Anyway – given the choice between looking back on 2010 and looking forward to 2011 I decided to do neither. Instead I thought some famous, infamous and right rich-making T-shirts might interest you lot.

Infamous T-shirts in 2010. There were a few, right? People getting arrested in airports for wearing terrorism on their fronts; hate Ts, shock Ts, but perhaps the biggest story of the year happened only a couple of weeks ago resulted in people buying a T-shirt they hadn’t seen, with a payment system that kept refusing to take their money, to support a guy that nobody could find, who was revealing the secrets that all the other guys wanted kept secret. Save-wikileaks.org said it “was giving away free t-shirt as a means to spread the word about Wikileaks and its fight to protect freedom of speech” but as one online payment system after another refused to process the wikileaks dosh, those tees became the currency of anarchy and wikileaks counterfeits and riffs flooded the net. I’m liking this redbubble comment shirt best of the wave.

Royal Wedding 2011. In case you hadn’t noticed, the UK is going nuptial in 2011. Here’s a zazzle take on Kate and Wills, which is a nice twisted mirror to his parents’ wedding in ’81.

If you have any old Charles and Di T-shirts, you could be looking at a nice little earner. One that was banned from sale back in 1981 sold on eBay in 2007 for £300.00 and today is valued at £750. If you’re wondering, it’s a cartoon image of the couple in bed on the honeymoon morning and it was originally sold in W.H. Smiths Heathrow, before the Lord Chancellor decided it was offensive to the monarchy. Find that in your attic and you could be considerably richer in 2011!

Ooh, coffee, our nearly favorite! Can’t say what our favorite favorite is for legal reasons, but coffee comes damn close. In reverse order our top three tees are:

#3 – The Herkimer Coffee T-shirt from Destee-nation – you may not known Seattle and you may not have tried Herkimer’s coffee but this teeshirt wins because of the great subtle colors and the sort of Bauhaus feel to the design – not sure if Bauhaus was ever big in Seattle but there you go, we approve.

As one of those little instigations to purchase, a Destee-nation T-shirt comes with a little tag that tells you about the coffee supplier in question and why they think it’s worth promoting. Sort of reminds us of ‘Local’, the series of comics published by Oni Press that featured a different city in each issue, but Seattle was never one of them – Brian Wood was the writer, for those who care about such things (like Kay).

#2 – If you’re a Starbucks junkie look away now – Kay drinks a lot of starbucks, while Mikey favors something called Horlicks that is brewed by monks in rural England or Irn-Bru which is from Scotland and causes fights, apparently. Anyway, it seems a lot of people who value independence over truly great standardised coffee object to world domination by the coffee house in question and this protest T-shirt by rubyred at redbubble is the result. We like the collision of cultural icons here, we like the excellent use of color and Mikey likes the post-consumer angst expressed in buying a T-shirt to express concern about consumerism and its effects – circular, innit?

#1 – There’s a lot of these around, but the best of them is at thinkgeek. As seen on The Big Bang Theory this is the caffeine molecule T-shirt. Well actually it’s an alkaloid, but who’s picky? Thinkgeek is, as they tell us in some detail: in chemical line-angle structures (like the structure of caffeine shown on our t-shirt), carbon and hydrogen are not usually shown explicitly. Carbon is assumed to be at every junction of lines, and the proper number of hydrogen atoms needed to give each carbon a total of four bonds is assumed. This representation of the caffeine molecule is simplified based on these rules and is widely used and recognized throughout the scientific community.
Right, so that’s why their caffeine model is different to other caffeine models and if you’re the kind of person who both drinks coffee and wears a molecule on your T-shirt, Mikey thinks this is going to be the shirt for you.

Also, it’s cool to be clever, right? And lime green on navy is the T-shirt equivalent of drawing the correct caffeine molecule – it’s simple, it’s elegant and it gets you to the top.

I may be a little more idealistic than Mikey (which isn’t difficult, a cynical demon from Hell would be more idealistic than him) but it seems significant to me that we’re saying goodbye to a decade that’s been a pretty tough ten years all round: tsunamis and terrorists and collapsing economies and climate change …

Well, good riddance! I wanted to pick a T-shirt that was uplifting and had a powerful message for the future. I know I whine a lot (or so Mikey tells me) about T-shirts that are tacky and degrading, but it seems to me that if you’re going to wear a message, it’s important that what you’re saying is meaningful, not just funny. We actually had a fight about this pick because my colleague thinks the ‘New Year’s Resolution – Take Long Ego Trips’ teeshirt is a better choice than my redbubble one. He’s wrong, for so many reasons …

But even Mikey agrees that the layout on this teeshirt is neat, simple and elegant. The message is expressed universally, no clever words needed, just a stark imagery that links the date, the world and the wearer. I like Redbubble, which describes itself a ‘forum for self expression, an inclusive art gallery and a supportive and welcoming community’ and we haven’t featured it for a long time. So here you are, the last teejunkie T-shirt of the year, and one that I hope makes you think a little about where we go from here.
